Second Life looks like a multimedia game that is increasingly sophisticated. However, it's not a game but rather a way of creating a second environment. The learning design is up to the educator, who designs for learning and evaluates the student's learning experience.
Think about the ancient Scandinavian society. They had a special tent set up called the Sir Army Tent where went to worship. Where a person could go and whom they could talk to within the tent depended on their status. Second Life would build that tent to allow students to see for themselves these restrictions based on their status.
The thing I love about SL.. is everything you see started out with a box...

in formal education we (the educators), when using technologies, must support the learning - make it worthwhile, make it clear the direction we're going in. This is what I mean by designing for learning. Second Life (and all other technology enhanced formal learning) is like real life- quality learning experiences can be created, and made accessible, made easier, made more effective. Gilly

Towards the end it is said something like
"you have to understand the learning design...
there is nothing intrinsic in second life or mp3 files....it is up to us the educators to design for learning and then to evaluate the learning experience"
Is this actually true. There is a lot of deign in SL already and people have their own experience.
