The name Cagayan was derived from the word tagay, a kind of plant that grows abundantly in the northern part of the province. Thus, Catagayan which means a place where the tagay grows abundantly was shortened to Cagayan, the present name of the province.

Not "Tagay" its "Cagay" a wild vine with shining oval type leaf (resembling the leaf of the luttu or the aneg), it has sharp black thorns on its immediate base and after the thorns are the roots spread of apart. Digging the roots deep down is the delicious product resembling the color of an ube. Seldom we find it now... it thrives in the jungle.
