why is there no clips of the films and only these dumb stills with subtitles over them ?

Neorealist films were usually recorded without sound and then later dubbed. If you watch Fellini's La Strada you'll notice Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart two american actors that didn't speak italian, but were later dubbed for the film. It was common to use american actors in foreign films in order to get wider recognition.

I don't understand how they say Paul Newman was considered for Marcello's role in La Dolce Vita, he didn't speak Italian did he?
