In a near by future, a mutated strand of the H5N1 Virus (Avian Flu) spreads quickly and infects 95% of the human population on the east coast of the United States within three months of Day X (day of original outbreak). The US military reacts quickly, but is not able to quarantine the infected areas in time. However, they set up a border near the Appalachian mountains and the respective borders of the infected states. Martial law was soon declared but even with curfew and heavy military presence, the disease continued to spread. Checkpoints were established, military outposts which would evacuate all non-infected. Checkpoints were on a first come first serve basis, but only lasted for 72 hours from point of lockdown. Most checkpoints became contaminated in which military personal was given permission to open fire and kill all non military personal at the checkpoints. All non infected refuges were sent to "CCs" or "Clean Camps" located on the border of the infected/non infected zone. Three weeks after days after Day X , military personal was told to engage all humans, regardless if they showed symptoms of infection. The remaining 5% of the non-infected either had a natural immunity to the virus, or were simply lucky not to become infected.

While most (70%) of the infected died from the virus within 24-48 hours of their contraction of the virus, the remaining 30% became cannibals or "zombies" for lack of a better word. These "zombies" were not capable of human speech, yet had the same build and had a very similar biological composition of that of humans. They could move at the same speed as their "previous selves" but they were not invulnerable. Any type of physical damage that would hurt a human would hurt a zombie. Although they needed oxygen to survive, they hand-eye coordination was minimal. They can't open doors, pick up objects, or drive vehicles. However, despite their imperfections, they don't need water. Although unexplained to scientists, these zombies don't need water to survive (although they need food and oxygen). According to scientists, they can go approximately five years without food or water, but their metabolism would obviously degenerate over time. However, this is yet to be proven. Unlike traditional zombies, they can't be killed with "only headshots" and they do not "rise from the dead". They can feed off each other, but would only attack each other in times of starvation.

Of the lonely 5%, pocket resistances are formed, consisting of survivors who banned together to fight the military and the zombies as well as the "demons" who are those who are infected, yet posses human characteristics (zombies, yet capable of speech and human thought process) or more commonly known as "those who haven't got a chance to peacefully die".
