Update: A few people have pointed out that I did not take into account the number of motorists who also may have been obeying the speed limit exactly when I was taking the video, this is a fair call. But without a radar gun or other measuring device, I could only measure other vehicle speeds by comparing theirs to mine.

The fact remains that if 80 km/h was a reasonable speed limit based on predicted 85th percentile speeds, then I should have overtaken several vehicles when I had the cruise control set at 80 km/h, whilst being overtaken by only a minority. I did catch up up to one vehicle, which exited prior to me passing, and was overtaken by 22 vehicles. This indicates to me that whilst travelling at the speed limit, my vehicle was one of the slowest on the GDE.

Of course if every motorist on the road was travelling smack bang at 80 km/h, I would have overtaken nobody, and nobody would have passed me.

Original Description: The Gungahlin Drive Extension was officially "fully open" as of late last week. Naturally I had to check it out. Sad to say it, but it does appear that an 80 km/h speed limit, arguably not compliant with Australian Standards, has been implemented along the entire length of the road. This video explains why the speed limit does not comply with the Australian Standard for speed controls.

The road was designed for a 90 km/h speed limit, and yet, prior to any traffic surveys being able to be conducted, prior to any crashes or crash analysis being conducted, the decision to lower the speed limit by 10 km/h and install point to point speed cameras was made.

  • why is that rd 80, i am from WA and to me that looks like our freeway, beside the bike lane. no lights, all traffic has enough road to speed up to required speed should at least be 90 if not 100.

my only gripe is the way you do your stat counting is only taking into account speeders so of course it is going to be 100%

to be more accurate you would have to track sections of the roads getting speed which obviously would be alot harder but u are defiantly making a point

  • People should revolt and not use the road, or better still drive the damn thing at 70klm so they make NO revenue from it. Actually better still, destroy the cameras.
