What a lovely advert. The boy giving his dad a signal box for a birthday present. How lovely, indeed. Of course, it does have a heart-warming feel to it, though.

I used to love this advert, it is so lovely and gentle and heartwarming. The ''mum'' looked just like my mum as well back then...I miss ads like this.....

@billiepipersteeth I don't think Google was around in 1992 to be honest...more like 1998.

@billiepipersteeth Nope!

@wikichris Well despite popular belief, Google was around in 1992 so he could have done exactly that, trouble is like most 14 year olds of the era we'd already maxed out our download limits on internet pornography.

@callinstead09 Are you John Vennables trying to chalk up brownie points with your parole officer by posting insincere self-rightous deviod-of-humour comments on youtube? You are aren't you?

Viz made a much better version of this. It was exactly the same up until the boy goes cycling off to the shop; he then gets hit by a car and killed. His mum is later shown using Yellow Pages to find the funeral directors - brilliant!

@acme181169 Yes who would have though it. In fact, when Harry Lonsdale suspected Smithy was on the take and invited him round to provide an explanation, Harry didn't think that he did a very good job of it, so he grabbed the nearest thing to hand, which just so happened to be a 15 inch black carriage from a First Great Western InterCity 125 Executive, and proceeded to beat poor old Smithy to death with.

If my kid got me an R1866 signal box for my birthday he'd get a dry slap. Dad's birthdays are for hookers and special brew.
thanks for the upload. hard to find this though. try puting signal box or hornby in the title. Cheers!
