In this video I try out a "sweet" idea given to me by BrokenAeroVT to use sugar as a fuel for camp stoves.
There's an old bar bet where you challenge someone to light a cube of sugar. Normally if you put a match to a cube of sugar it will melt and bubble but won't catch fire.
The secret is to dip the cube in some cigarette ash. Now when you put a match to the area of the cube with the ash on it it should light right up.
In this test I used raw sugar that is pretty coarse mixed with the ash from two index cards. The first two attempts to light the sugar, first with a match then with a mini-torch, didn't work. Then I added a little SLX denatured alcohol, maybe a little more than 1 ml, and put a match to the mixture.
The mixture burned surprising well I thought but I don't believe it would make a good fuel for a camp stove. Maybe with a little more testing it could be improved. I've seem people make rocket fuel out of sugar so there must be a mixture out there that works.
I want to thank BrokenAeroVT for the suggestion and thank you for watching my video.

  • have you tried *dry creamer *

  • In place of the sugar or added to the sugar?

  • You said that you didn't think the sugar would work in this state. What state are you in? Do you think it would work in Florida?

  • I think it was a state of confusion. That's a good question about Florida. I would like to think so since I was born there (in Key West that is). LOL

  • thats cool, i never even considered sugar burning.

P.S., what is the song at the begining?

    thanks

  • this sucks like really bad really wasted my time

  • replace the ashes with an oxidizer

  • takes long but the flame is very good

  • lol wacKK!!!

  • Place a small flame (candle size) underneath the sugar, this will make it burn much, much better. The flames are hydrogen burning, so it is extremely hot and won't leave and residue on the cookware (except for carbon where the sugar was kept)

  • Potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sugar.

  • Hiram, try char cloth and grind it up and mix with the sugar. Also, have you set a Frito or Dorito on fire? Makes great firestarter!

  • pit in some saw dust sugar and water like a paste make a ball or sq. let dry in sun then try

  • non-dairy creamer instead of sugar .

     flamable
