LA actually had an extensive streetcar system prior to the 60s, before they were pulled out in favor of freeways. It's sad, because those surface tracks could've been upgraded to light-rail systems reaching even deep into Riverside and Orange County. So in a sense, Metro Rail came and went, and came again :-(.

the metro rail came too late for los angeles. we should of had a rail system in the 60's. LA should learn from NY.

We once had a 1100 mile interurban rail system that served Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties. Yes, those 1100 miles of track could have been upgraded for a modern metro system but as always Los Angeles has to do things the hard way.
