Ohhh, kaamoooon, dont be ridiculos. Smith and Wesson will work in street fight. I mean, no one would rob you 1 vs 1 and having no weapon in his hands.
In fact fans have been used as a weapon in Chinese kung fu. I don't really know about martial arts but I guess it's not recognizable because very few people know how to use it. The weapon fan is made of metal ribs and these ribs are often sharp pointed blades. Closed, it's more like a spinning spike. When you open and swing it, it can actually cut through the weak parts of the human body with the right amount of force. It looks really innocent so it is very easy to carry around and hide away.
@twobitmage Ive seen quite a few CMA class use it . However this is in modern times and i believe it been passed down from Opera. I doubt the original system used fans and I know quite a few practitioners who have never. In China a lot of male martial artists shun it as they say its for girl. Ive looked into this before and unlike most traditional CMA weapons, there is no historical record of fans being used in open warfare
@Shantou1 it sure was used in fights. In Japanese martial arts they don't open it up like he's doing here. It's an iron fan that was used as a makeshift bludgeoning weapon. It definitely wasn't the deadliest weapon but it is also definitely documented.
Maybe my information on CMA was off, but I've seen certain hung ga lineages use it.
@twobitmage It was never sued for martial practice, never used in any war. Completely impractical. i can't answer of Japanese martial arts as I am not as familiar with Japanese martial arts. However with CMA it was main stay and first used in Chinese Opera for show. Its martial use is thus for show. Looks nice and pretty. Has limited usage against conventional weapons and even against unarmed opponents. Today MA that use fan have taken from Opera such as some tai chi groups.
@Shantou1 ..actually iron fan has been used in both chinese and japanese martial arts. I don't know where you get your information, but it's incorrect.
Is this instructor using it properly as it pertains to Choy Lay Fut? I have no idea. It isn't my style. But fans have been used before.

pretty interestin thing. I've heard about this tecnique - defending with fan, but never seen this.
Seemly that avoidence tactic is very common in all sports. The same you'll find in classic box, muay-thai, capoera and etc
