World Trade Center Attack From Empire State Building, 11 September 2001

Architect Deborah Gans, with an office on a high floor of the Empire State building, heard the first attacking aircraft pass noisily over but did not understand why it was flying so low. It flew roughly along 5th Avenue heading south. Alerted by news reports she went to the window to photograph WTC North Tower after the initial hit and then after the second plane attacked the South Tower(final three photos). Soon afterward Empire State management ordered evacuation.

That macabre death wish desire is especially virulent at the WTC reconstruction site, thanks to heavy media recycling of the terrible images. In the early years, WTC managers avoided any sign of the attack and hid the debris with fanciaful renderings of the reconstruction. Now at WTC the posters blare the gruesome event for gawkers to grimace at with toxic hot dogs, the evidence of utter national security failure subsumed in the vengeful wars in South Asia.

Fear of being in another target came later, after it was understood what had happened at WTC. At first, nobody thought it was an attack, instead an awful accident. Then, confidential news of WTC being a likely attack came to the Empire State Building management, that it could be a target, and the building was evacuated. Now ESB is a prime target, but for who knows what blind faith, many of the tenants have remained, including the taker of these photos.

To todzilla73, correct. the Empire State building was hit in the 1940s by an Army Air Force B-26, I think it was. Check Google. Empire State has a much more substantial structural system than the towers.

At that time it was suspected the Empire State building could be a target that day. And it is still at risk, from aircraft or from a lethal visitor. Tourists now go through strict security checks: ID'd, inspected and photographed, and videoed and cop-watched while on the observation platforms.

The Sears tower in Chicago got evacuated during 9/11. I can't believe they didn't evacuate the Empire State Building and it's in the SAME CITY as the WTC, crazy!!!

In a way they are lucky it was only the WTC towers and not something as special as the empire state building. But still very sad to see them go!

@Cripto3333 Actually it did, about 3-5 Times.....Pretty much every skyscraper in the United States was closed that day.
