I was working at RDU at the time when this plane came in. A company in another country I'm not sure where, was renting a generator from GE. The Antonov was the only plane big enough to transport it.

I think if a century ago you could demonstrate that this thing can fly then you'd get horribly killed medieval-style.

@bedya88 - Soviet planes then :P - but fair point

Its not ruussian, this is Ukrainian plane

How about from Lumley Rd....I spot from there when they're landing from that direction

no, the one that carries the US shuttle is a modified 747, however, this "little" jet was built to carry the russian Buran shuttle
-
is that plane the one who delivers the shutle?

I am glad you were able to get some good footage of this. I skipped out of work early on friday to watch some plane come in and to my amazement I saw this one sitting at the cargo apron. Much better coverage than wral.

Thank you, knball. I had a tripod with me and planned to set it up, but the plane arrived quite a bit earlier than we expected and I had no time - as you can see I scrambled enough just to capture something. I did watch the newcasts on ABC and NBC and did not think their coverage was very good, either. :)

I actually came back that evening with my fiance to watch it depart. Do you have any idea why they needed to fly it rather than ship it via oceanliner? An once last question, how did you know it was coming in? I try to stay up to date with big airport events, but this one slipped by.

I do not know why they chose to air freight it versus cargo ship. Perhaps something to do with time and cost tradeoffs. I may be able to find out - I'll post the answer if I can get it.
I found out about it at about 11pm the night before on WRAL's website. Saw the article posted on there and decided to see if we could make it. Got lucky to see it with so little notice.
