Welcome to Part 7 of our '2001 Retrospective', in which we address Confused Matthew's recent review of '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
Leading on from the HAL topic, Poparena and I insist that differing interpretations will certainly exist for every film and text, let alone '2001'. A diverse variety of opinions allows for complex discussions like these. Therefore, CM is mistaken when he declares that a variety of analyses, or no one consensus, mean that everyone is wrong or 'making it up'.
You will find parts 1-4, and Poparena's own Animorphs series, through this link: www.youtube.com/user/poparena
Stay tuned for the final two parts of our discussion.
Enjoy!
My main problem about CM's review of 2001 is that it's the only Kubrick film he has reviewed. So, he completely understood The Shining? 2001, as he "objectively" puts it, is about nothing, if you don't interpret it. Well, guess what, you HAVE to interpret The Shining, because the "supernatural" elements are never explained as supernatural, real, hallucinations, dream sequences, metaphors, or symbols, so you MUST interpret what it all means to understand it. P.S., you didn't like Dr. Strangelove?

Yeah, creating an "us" vs them thing is so unfair,
"How Religion Poisons Everything..." by Christopher Hitchens.
