It is an exhibition report of NAOKO NAKATANI held in WEISSRAUM now.
She lives in LONDON more than 25 years. She is from Osaka, graduated from GOLDSMITH in LONDON and married and did child care and did artist activity. And she takes the role as STAFF of WEISSRAUM in LONDON now.

Her father died in this January. It is the first Bon this year.
ABOUT BON
Only death is impartial for all creatures. We have the Bon Festival.
the Bon Festival;a Buddhist festival for honoring the spirits of ancestors. It is held from August 13 to 16.
Our ancestors come back to the house and stay together with us.
And they come back with a farewelling spirits bonfire again to heaven, paradice, another world.....
Her father left again, too.

She went back to japan alone this time.
It is an exhibition of DRAWING which she finished at the parents' house for about 1 month.
When I met and talked with her in LONDON in June, I heard about her PLAN of DRAWING.

At first there is 12 pieces of small black and white DRWAING by Chinese ink arranged in WEISSRAUM. She says--- Her father gets sick and only hears the change of his condition from her mother on the telephone. Various feeling and thinking comes and gone in her mind.
And his condition turned worse and became serious and came back to japan. She cared for him with family on his deathbed. Came and went in her mind among funeral / ashes ....
It is expressed to 12 pieces.
The 1st DRAWING of the left is full moon to the last DRAWING of the star.
When she was young, she left Japan. The part of her feeling and thinking against various Japanese things / phenomena are different from us in a sense. For her there are not natural or strange ---our way of understanding and recognizing.
When I talk with foreign friends about the history about Japanese culture, I sometimes get an unexpected question. Then I noticed----for us some tradition or some phenomena in japan are not strange, we do not aware of having wondered---how I did not know and think about!!!!! I knew nothing about japan......Then I would try to read and sturdy. After all it is good to recognize my position clarifies, to know myself deeply.
Some friends said that they do similar experience from me.

I talked a lot with her who came to watch the Gion festival on the next day when she came back to japan, and to watch the farewelling spirits bonfire on just before back to U.K. Anyway she could be with her father who came back by the first Bon and say good-by with a farewelling spirits bonfire. His spirit returned to the world over there again.
It was the 1st time to see a farewelling spirits bonfire. I only could show the form of TORII(a gateway to a Shinto shrine) ---.But she could see floating lanterns for the spirits of the dead from the center of HIROSAWANO IKE pond on the boat. It must have been impressive for her.

For her, how it was reflected—such japan, Kyoto and in my ordinary days? I hope these experiences should have become new materials to think variously for her. I only pray.......
