Taiwanese American and APA Artists on Overcoming Racism & Stereotypes

Taiwanese American and Asian American artists discuss their personal experiences with stereotypes and racism and how it influences their creative work. The interviews feature 2nd generation Taiwanese Americans such as actor Adam Wang of Formosa Betrayed, R&B singer-songwriter Dawen, music video producer / filmmaker Karen Lin, and creative director Jerry Ma of the Secret Identities Superhero Anthology. Other featured Asian American artists include Prohgress and Kevnish of Far East Movement, actor Parry Shen, and writer Jeff Yang.

These series of interviews were conducted by staff members of TaiwaneseAmerican.org and edited by Jason Lee of Turtlist Media for a presentation by Junior High Program counselors Kevin Lee, Justin Yang and Ann Wu at the 2009 Taiwanese American Foundation Summer Conference.

This is funny (wait, I promise I'm not a troll) when I think about my own Taiwanese-American identity: growing up in America, I remember these racist remarks, but what confused me even more is that when I spent time in Taiwan, I encountered racism as well: people calling me "White" even when I look Asian. Anyone else have this kind of experience as an Asian American?

@IronJackalTw privilege? i transfered from ucla to ntu because i wanted to learn the language and environment matters. you, on the other hand, are an all around a sad individual, playing the race card. i've helped handfuls of taiwanese apply to US universities and they've all been accepted, most with full-ride scholarships. racism is real, no matter where you are, so dont try to blame other people for so called injustices. seeing how you've conducted yourself, just might be your own incompetence

@IronJackalTw ABC's have a hard time finding teaching jobs in taiwan because i guess you taiwanese are racist against your own? parents want the best english education for their kids and it's not white people's fault that you taiwanese equate english with whiteness. ironic to say the least. but it's harder still if your black. i have 5 black neighbors from africa and they cant get jobs because they might "scare" kids. imagine someone saying that to an applicant in the states...lol

@IronJackalTw hah actually my job is being a student and you should go thank the taiwanese gov for giving me a 5 year scholarship (monthly stipend is more than the average college graduate makes over here) to get a BA in chinese and a master's in interpretation. and you're right, in addition to the scholarship, i also edit and help correct graduate student's theses at 500 US a pop and write their SOPs at 1k US a pop. not a bad life you taiwanese make for a white american. thanks taiwan!
