Every summer the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) runs a Family Education Program at their Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario. CAW members bring their families during their vacation to learn about the union and issues facing Canadian families. Children are in a recreation program just like summer camp. Teenagers attend classes geared to youth where we discuss their rights on the job, healthy relationships, and human rights. They participate in acting / spoken word, and drumming workshops as well as going on field trips to Blue Mountain in Collingwood and bowling in Owen Sound. The teen and adult classes vote on a Local Union number, elect a President, Vice President and Recording Secretary and participate in team-building recreation events each evening. The first day the teens are all cranky and don't want to be there. The last day they are all crying because they have to leave! It's an amazing program! Here's a pictorial of the Teen Session from July 2011.
