"HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY? FOR NINETEEN YEARS YOU HAVEN'T SHUT UP! HAZEL I NEED YOU TO SAY SOMETHING. NOW!" Nick was crying, but not because he was sad, he was crying because Hazel sounded like she was giving up. When Hazel gave up. Nick knew he had nothing. It was fear, fear consumed him, consumed his soul, forcing him to loose almost all hope, he was too scared to move. Too scared to say "enough" but he was even more scared of losing the light. Losing Hazel.
"Nicholas." Hazel sighed, and then she was gone, through the hole and down the ladder. There was nothing she could say to change things. Looking back, Hazel would realise there was something she could say, but it wasn't until that night she realised it.
"Forever." Hazel whispered as she rested her head on Joes chest.
"Forever?" Joe kissed Hazels head.
"Are we, will we be... I mean, is this..."
Joe nodded and wrapped his arms around Hazel a little bit tighter. "If you want it to be." He whispered pulling her face close to his.
"I love you." Hazel sighed kissing Joe.
"Nothing like I love you."
"Are we really going to have this fight?"
Joe smiled and shook his head. "It's a tie." He said.
Hazel nodded and kissed Joe again.
"But... Hazel, what's up, I mean, is there something wrong? I mean..." Concern took the place of Joes smile.
"You want to know what made me ask?"
Joe nodded and Hazel breathed deeply.
"Well, I just... I heard a sad story today, and it made me wonder what things were like with us. You may think things are perfect, but, as it turns out they may not be. You may think you know what someone thinks or feels, or why they do things, but you could be wrong.... I just want to know that we're good."
"Hazel, we're good. I know things aren't perfect. Nothings perfect."
"Oh I don't know Joseph." Hazel looked up at her boyfriend and saw the love in his eyes. "I found you didn't I?"
Joe smiled and kissed Hazel so deeply it made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Joe had an effect on her you couldn't describe.
"You know, everyone thinks we're doing it... Well, maybe not Denise, but everyone else does." Hazel said ten minutes later making Joe a sandwich.
"Well, we're not..." Joe yelled back flipping through the channels.
"Yet...." Hazel sat beside him and handed Joe his plate.
"Yet?"
"Well, look at us, I'm nineteen, you're almost twenty two, we both agree we'll marry young, and non offense baby, but you're not getting any younger, I'm not saying lets go to Vegas and elope, I'm just saying that it's just the way things look from where I'm standing."
"Hazel?"
"Mhm...."
"You have a lot of time to think about this don't you."
"Well, I live at my school, so I have zero commute, the courses I take never really require homework, and my roommate, Xanthe, spends more time playing tonsil hockey with my step brother than anything else, so thinking is pretty much all I've got..."
"When you're not playing tonsil hockey with your boyfriend." Joseph smiled.
"Joe..."
"Move in with me." Joe looked at her, not an ounce of sarcasm in his eyes or voice.
"Are you sure?" Hazel watched Joe nod, and again, they were making out.
