This is bad because you verbalize the awkward situation you're in and, more importantly, put pressure on everyone to contribute to the conversation. Notice how awkward the old man in the back looked? A better elevator opener would be something short and funny like "Okay guys, if we get stuck in here you can eat me first, I have lots of nutrients" or "What's the craziest thing you've seen happen in an elevator?" with a follow up of your own quick elevator story.

There was one time I saw this very attractive young lady in Wal-Mart and thought about approaching, but felt anxiety. I kept seeing her in different parts of the store. Finally, 12 minutes later or so, the boyfriend popped in. It's these type of things that make it difficult.. That was actually part of my fear - that he was probably somewhere. Well, the only reason I even ran into her is because I was trying to use the electronics register rather than stand 15+ min in any of the front checkouts!

I keep finding examples of not fighting the focus. Im starting to think its a huge part of everything. She was focused on the awkward elevator silence, you said, "isn't funny how nobody talks to anyone in an elevator" and boom, she was there, and not only was she there but she was ready to contribute to the conversation. Great stuff as always.
