Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura, LA MUSIQUE DE LA BIBLE RÉVÉLÉE (Harmonia Mundi France), Track 08.
This slideshow of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 includes the consonantal Hebrew Masoretic Text and modified versions of the transliteration and translation provided by Lev Software. The ancient melodic line and modality were inferred by her from the Masoretic Text (Letteris Edition).
The "Shema` Yisrael (Hear, O Israel)" is such a fundamental text that it's not surprising how often I'm asked about it. It's a shame that SHV's first recording didn't present it in a better light. It needs to be sung at a higher pitch than it is here for best results. Moreover, bass cantor Emile Kacmann sang an important ornament on the wrong syllable (on *ha-e-le*); and he didn't sing on pitch all the time. All the same, I think he did an expressive job and the resulting video turned out better than I hoped it would.
I don't normally make SHV's scores available to such a wide audience, but for the moment, those interested in the score to this work may download it here:
