That Is true about the UI being different then other software, but I've been able to make some pretty cool stuff in blender. The UI is vary different from other, but the by using blender you are learning some good mottling skills and fluids behave the same way in blender as cinema 4d. cinema 4d is way better but many of the skills are the same in blender
"Opens in 3D view, might be more familiar for people just getting into 3D to help them realize that this is a 3D app [...]"
There is truth in those words, I had no idea how to use Blender for a long time after I downloaded it entirely because I didn't get what it was supposed to be when it opened.
It does help using 3d apps with similar UIs, but i would recommend Blender to get up to speed with 3D concepts and general modeling tools you find in other 3D apps. It would be easier finding the tools while knowing what they do than the other way round. I can understand why Blender may not be for everyone though.
I heard that if you are planning on getting into 3D design do not get Blender (not 100% if they said "Blender").
They said that Blender doesn't use the same UI layout of other modeling programs which makes it hard to go from Blender to Maya or whatever modeling app studios use.
