Storytellers in Motion Episode 12: The Maori Voice Part One
In episodes 12 and 13 of Storytellers in Motion we travel to Aotearoa (New Zealand), Hawaii and England, to meet some of the most influential Maori storytellers working in cinema and television.
Barry Barclay, Merata Mita, Tainui Stephens, Don Selwyn, Carey Carter, Vanessa Rare and Ainsley Gardiner are introduced and tell their own stories. We quickly become aware of the many parallels between their experiences and those of contemporary Indigenous storytellers in Canada.
Forcing its way through the "stereotypical crap", powerful and confident, authentic Maori programming is on the rise, and is now reaching much wider audiences. Twenty five years ago, linguists were predicting the demise of the Maori language. As we see, they couldn't have been more wrong.
