This is a poem about the dark side of Thanksgiving that few are aware of. The little girl won first place for her poem "Dark Celebration". Here are the words:
There are stories old and new
Some not entirely true
Thanksgiving comes and goes
But how much do we really know?
Come November, everyone celebrates
Thinking the holiday is all so great
The truth, however, is hidden in the past
And is enough to make anyone aghast
We hear what we want to believe
Not that which would make our souls bleed
We, as humans, should know
Of the sadness that happened so long ago
The beginning of the end of the Native Americans that day
For them, Thanksgiving is depressing and gray
It reminds them of a friendship that was betrayed
Today, nobody should be filled with glee
Celebrating with innocent, killed turkeys
Is Thanksgiving really a time to give thanks?
What about the Native Americans who were flanked?
I don't understand why
Most people will laugh, but no one will cry
The tale of Thanksgiving was made to cover up guilt
It's far from the truth - the story was built
There are many points of view
But only one is true
Thanksgiving has negative points too
I know the dark side of it - do you?
This is a very insightful poem really GOOD !!!!!!
