With multi role LCA Tejas joining the Indian air force, India has joined the elite group of 7 countries (USA, France, UK, Russia, Sweden, China & India) which can make their own fighter aircrafts.

Tejas Mk 1 will replace the non-upgraded Mig 21s which are around 40-50 in number... and would be utilized more for ground attack, and anti-ship roles...the Tejas Mk 2 will replace the Mig-21 Bison...and will be a dedicated fighter...will feature a more powerful engine and a different radar...

@TheWarriorsMr HAL director said the flight qualities are better than mirage-2000... when the air chief said its mig-21 ++ he meant the operational capability..not the technology... talking about mark 1 & 2 the only difference is the engine.. ge414 instead of ge404....and the radar...and you are right mig-21 is not a bad aircraft..

LCA is not 4Generation aircraft.LCA is Mig-21+ said by current Indian airforce chief. He further said that "LCA is a learning experience for IAF and the mark1 is not combat worthy". LCA engine is underpowered and yet to achieve FOC and first squadron will be completed by 2015/16. Similarly LCA mark2 squadron will be completed by 2020/22 and after this FOC and LCA mark 2 performances will be same as MiG21 bison and MiG21 bison is not a bad aircraft.
