Get a hold of PYROTECHNICA Issue #10 which will give you a scientific data on jet propulsion, the burning velocity, and other valuable data to feed and stimulate an inquisitive mind.
Before the Manhattan Project and the censure of all material pertaining to radioactive materials during the Second World War, Uranium dioxide was used as a coloring agent to impart a greenish hue to the "stars" after an air burst from a shell which was lifted off by a mortar. Back then, pyrotechnic mortars were made out of steel. This proved to be unsafe due to the shrapneling effects from "flowerpots". PVC, then cardboard or HDPE replaced the dangerous steel pipes as mortars.
