I thought I might try my hand at the cage match/sing-off business---what better way than with Faust's famous high C in his aria "Salut! demeure chaste et pure"! rank/list your favorites---your tenors in chronological order:

1. Enrico Caruso, 1910; studio recording
2. Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, 1928; studio recording
3. George Thill, 1930; studio recording
4. Beniamino Gigli, 1935; studio recording
5. Richard Tucker, 1953; New Orleans
6. Jan Peerce, 1955 - Metropolitan Opera
7. Jussi Bjoerling , 1959 - Metropolitan Opera
8. Nicolai Gedda, 1971 - Teatro Colon
9. Jaime Aragall, 1971 - Barcelona Liceu
10. Placido Domingo, 1972 - Metropolitan Opera
11. Alfredo Kraus, 1973 - Tokyo
12. Neil Shicoff, 1987 - Lyric Opera of Chicago
13. Richard Leech, 1991 - Metropolitan Opera
14. Roberto Alagna, 2004 - Metropolitan Opera
15. Piotr Beczala, 2005 - Bad-Kissengen Festival

  • It's VERY strange that Jussi Bjorling have so few viewers on YouTube... According to me it's inconceivable that he don't have more than one million viewers on a single video with only him. Spread this message of hope that more people will discover this great tenor!

  • Gounod marks 'piano' on the high C. Out of these singers I'm most impressed by Georges Thill's attempt to stay true to the composer's intentions. But the best I've heard is a concert version by Giuseppe di Stefano. Stunning!

  • 1.Bjoerling (holy crap)

    2.Gedda (liked his phrasing)

3.Kraus (something wonderfully appealing about his voice)

    Didn't like:

    Tucker

    Domingo

  • Obviously the ones that were transposed are not in the running for the best. The worst one (for me) was Alagna's.... that was embarassing. Best? Kraus. By far.

  • There are some B naturals there, including Bjoerling.

    My faves:

Lauri-Volpi, Gigli, Kraus, Leech (although you can hear what's going to happen to him later on...), Beczala

I disqualified those who transposed, though I really like Bjoerling's.

  • @tklogan111809

Domingos high notes are always embarrassing ;)

  • Domingo's "hich c" is a cop-out, offensive and embarrassing.

  • Kraus no question.

  • Bjorling for me when it comes to Faust.

  • Caruso's C#5 almost sounds falsetto but it still sounds so beautiful!

  • Domingo is my favorite

  • @bkmk777 Placido Domingo as well.
