MaximsNewsNetwork: 23 September 2009: UNTV: Opening the GA, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon tells dozens of world leaders that the world's most pressing challenges can only be solved when countries unite through the UN. Brazil's President Lula da Silva calls for a return to power of Honduran leader José Manuel Zelaya, Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi praises US president Barack Obama and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni tells the Horn of Africa to "wake up."
The worlds most pressing challenges can only be solved when countries unite through the United Nations; Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told dozens of world leaders gathered today (23 September) for the opening of the General Assemblys annual high-level meeting in New York.
Speakers included Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as well as Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Lula spoke of the situation in Honduras, saying that the international community demands that deposed President Manuel Zelaya immediately return to the presidency of his country and calling for the inviolability of Brazils diplomatic mission in the capital of Honduras where Zelaya has taken refuge.
Gaddafi, in his first ever address to the UN gave a prolonged speech that touched on a range of issues including asymmetries in the international community and criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) for not trying those who have committed mass murder against Iraq and instead indicting third world leaders such as Charles Taylor of Liberia, Omar Bashir of Sudan.
He commended US President Barack Obama, whom he referred to as his son, but said that Obama is a glimpse in the dark for the four years, and after, I am afraid we might go back to square one.
Museveni commented that it is amazing and indeed shameful to see the low levels of electrification in Africa and said that the continent needs to wake up to this issue and cooperate to find a solution.
At a press conference later in the day Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero also commented on the situation in Honduras and called for a democratic restitution of the Honduran government through dialogue.

  • Gaddafi is a mass murderer. Period. Look at his face - he looks like Lord Voldemort. Nothing human left in him - just a blood-thirsty sadistic mentally deranged monster. Please, leaders of the free world, DO BLOODY SOMETHING!!! He is slaughtering his people now in Libya and so-called "democratic" countriesof the West are looking the other way. This is disgusting!!! Revolting!!! Where are YOUR BLOODY HUMAN RIGHTS ideals for which you claim to stand for??? Just lip service. OBAMA, I 'm DISGUSTED!
