@steffanp88 I don't think cellular automata have fitness functions. Instead they use simple rules which dictate their individual behaviour depending on their state, and the state of cells in their surrounding area. They can move or replicate in a certain direction, persist, change state, or die.
I'm no expert so I don't know if I covered everything...

These examples are samples from a large sequence space of potential outcomes in a cellular automata program I developed 2 years ago, designed to help me explore cellular self organization.
Each example shows the result of subtle variations in the program parameters. The exploration of the sequence space was done randomly involving no genetic programming or fitness function, the parameters where randomly changed, rendered and the results studied.
