I am completely at sea when Andrzej Panufnik (1914-1991) talked about the light passing a quasi-prism to form notes which guides his composition. Maybe you have to be composer to understand that kind of stuff. Fortunately for listening I can just rely on my ears and perception, and I like most works of his that I have heard. They are obviously modern but approachable. There is always an underpinning of vitality in his music which I find invigorating.
In Panufnik's own words, "Symphony No. 9 reflects my musical interpretation of the idea of Hope." Also, The strings and the winds are NOT out of sync: "... at the beginning and the end of the symphony, where the strings play in the manner of a chant in a huge cathedral, with the wind instruments shadowing them like an echo." If your mind works like mine, you may even catch a few glimpses of plainchants here and there.
