4 1/2 stars? Seriously? If this isn't 5, there is no such thing as 5.

@kjbl1 I think they still would have played like this if miles wasn't there :P

this is easily one of my favorite jazz albums. Amazing rendition of a classic tune. Red Garland is up there with the finest.

what a tight arrangement!! Red Garland is one of the best. I also love Ahmad Jamal's version (the recording with the guitar playing 'percussion' as well as the live stuff from the 50's).
Those block chords were the cat's meow at the time, it seems even Bud Powell was kind of taking cues from Red Garland's way of doing that, although I would easily believe it was the other way around
P.C. and Philly Joe Jones are my favorite for piano trios in this era

I love how Miles doesn't play on this song but its still such an awesome Miles Davis song.

Recordings can be deceptive, and it can hard to appreciate how fast this really is. Sure, it's not Cherokee at 300bpm, but it's still cooking pretty hot. I counted this tune off at gig at this speed once, and I was soon sweating. These guys make it sound easy, and they maintain the same tempo throughout. They had a pocket that was gigantic.

@DunhillHilton I don't think so - Red is highly regarded by pretty much all jazz musicians. His association with Miles is well remembered, even today. I think there are other guys less well knows who are also deserving: Sonny Clark, Phineas Newborn, Al Haig, Claire Fischer...

philly joe jones.. how have i not heard his name till now?

He is one of my favorite jazz drummers in 50's or 60's.

This could be the best trio work Red Garland ever recorded. It's simply amazing how Miles Davis got the best out of his musicians, actually even without playing himself, like in this particular number ... It seems that his mere presence in the recording studio was enough...

On the session of the album "Milestones", this was the only exceptional recording for Red Garland where Miles was still unaccustomed playing the modal jazz.
