The first half of 1979 was taken up with the huge effort needed to field 300-plus candidates. When the election arrived, the NF actually fielded 303 - nearly half the seats in the country. During the campaign, the old-gang parties and especially the Tories became very worried by the rapid rise of the movement and Thatcher came out with her now infamous speech in which she claimed that she "understood the fears of the British people of being swamped by coloured immigrants."

  • oh my god we have become swamped by all the third world rubbish! why do people use name calling like racist when you use fu&king common sense.

  • @YoungIvyScholar shove your "Xenophobic" buzzword up your ass. We all know it's a anti-white racist word that is used to deny the white race any homeland.

  • @rnewton182 it might have something to do with the fact that if you think people are 'third world rubbish' you are a racist.

  • wow the lefties really hit the streets when Thatcher makes some mild common sense remarks

  • The same people who call us 'racists' and 'xenophobes' for being concerned about non-White immigration into our countries would scream bloody murder if tens of thousands of White people were immigrating into African countries.

  • Although I am more pro-immigration that Lady Thatcher was, she certainly did have a point.

Having a more extreme and ruling Conservative Party is much better than a more xenophobic and ruling National Front Party.

  • @SniperMaske The free-market values immigration for cheap labour and maximisation of profits. It would be the home market that is against immigration.

  • @NatDemUK Actually, a true free-market approach to immigration would be AGAINST so-called “free” immigration; see Hans-Hermann Hoppe.

It was recently discovered that Thatcher was worried about immigration and would have preferred white immigrants (from Rhodesia for example) to non-white ones, but she just didn’t have the nerve.

  • So many people should learn the true sense of “racism” in a dictionary before using it…

Enoch Powell should have been Prime Minister; he was even better than Thatcher.

  • Thatcher was a liberal, not a conservative. Her concerns were more in relation to the free market rather than the nation. Note: the NF had lost its deposits in previous general elections (1970, Feb. 1974, Oct. 1974) and by-elections already so 1979 was no different since the quota was 12.5%. The NF only saved its deposit ONCE and that was the 1973 West Bromwich by-election in which Martin Webster stood where he gained 16% of the vote!
