"Sexy" - An original poem by Angel D.

Sexy.
They love that word, don't they?
Fashion magazines, tabloids, commercials, and critics.
Well I'm not their sexy.
I am the 21st century-
in touch with my homeland-
still got whip lashes across my back-
Massa-raped-mama-that's-why-we-so-light-skinned-
Dang! I broke another comb with my nappy hair-
Who said chipped fingernail polish ain't cute?-
ain't-never-had-my-eyebrows-done-
could give a .... what they say-
sexy.
And my cocoa-with-cream, chocolate-caramel-dream complexion is just a minor reflection
of the past I didn't see, but that pulses through my veins and reigns over my sutured spirit.
Every time I put one foot in front of the other and do my knock-off
hip-swaying wannabe Naomi Campbell walk,
I love to hear 'em talk,
saying, She think she all that,
'cause yeah baby, I am all that—and then some!
I didn't work those fields in the scorching sun day in day out with no pay,
getting pushed around and treated the worst,
just so when I'm good and tired he could choose me to come to his room and have his way—
to be told I am anything less than ALL THAT.
And if you saw Ezekiel's wheel in the middle of the wheel while following the North Star to freedom,
hoping dogs didn't sniff you out and eat you before or after you got sent back to that plantation and had the black nearly beat off you,
you would say you was all that and more too.
Expensive clothes ain't sexy.
Four-inch pumps ain't sexy.
And I don't know who told Victoria she should share her Secret,
but she coulda kept it 'cause as much as it costs,
it ain't sexy either.
Confidence? Now that's sexy.
Walking with your head above your collarbone so the world can see your smile—whether it's under construction, raggedy as all get-out, or just what your mama gave you—that's sexy.
Putting a little pep in your step and keeping it classy, while still letting them know who you rep,
baby that's sexy.
Not letting anyone disrespect the dignity and virtue you represent,
keeping your clothes loose enough to breathe and just low enough to tease but still leave a little to the imagination,
speaking with authority,
telling them, You won't ignore me,
and standing by your morals...
sexy.
So I may not be their standard of sexy,
but to me I am the reinvention of beauty, femininity, personality, stylishness, classy...
and sexy.
