Here is the one and only Eileen Farrell singing two songs of Johannes Brahms, "Botschaft" and "In Waldeseinsamkeit" as well as "Cäcilie" by Richard Strauss. These are taken from a concert in New Orleans, 13 December, 1954. The pianist is Walter Hatchek.

Here is a link to the entire Farrell/Nikolaidi recital:

They don't get any better than Farrell!

  • Great voice...Did´nt know her *red* ....And Interpretation very nice! 1954!! wow.... :-) Today sopranos would´nt sing in this manner, but it´s absolutely wonderful to follow! :-) (sorry my english, I´m no native, lol)

  • On Brahms "in waldeseinsamkeit" she actually sings the notes for much longer than Brahms atually wrote them, so, strictly speaking they could actually be stopped a bit more abruptly than she does.

  • why does EVERYONE stop the notes so abruptly in this song?? It just doesn't seem characteristic of Brahams or the music even, I don't get it???? Not a huge fan of her scoops either.. But she really does have a beautiful voice. I'm jealous of how soft she can get it.

  • Great!
