Germany's Lower Saxony is transformed as gnomes and magicians come to do battle in the town of Brokeloh. The seven thousand participants take on a character for five days, in what is the largest role play event in the world.

It looks like a battle from the Middle Ages.

But it's actually 21st century Germany -- and the weapons aren't real.

It's a once-a-year opportunity to escape into a fantasy world of gnomes, wizards and sprites.

For five days the town of Brokelah is transformed into a medieval place called "Mythodea."

More than seven thousand fantasy fans transform themselves for the largest live role play event in the world, known to its followers as "Conquest."

[Tobias Duder, Role-Player]:
"My character is Richard of Leuenfeld and he is a nobleman from a very small and relatively unknown land, who sets off with his friends for an adventure. He has arrived in Mythodea to fight on the side of the elements."

All types of whimsical characters wander around the altered landscape -- there either to protect or attack the fortress using whatever magical means possible.

[Stefanie Altmeier, Role-Player]:
"A water sprite is actually the manifestation of an element that has been made by magic. And that's why I am here because I have heard that the elements are outnumbered and that they need my help."

[Role-player, Kalle Turinski, Role-Player]:
"I am a magician, close to the other side, Hocus pocus, nothing really serious though."

And who directs all this murder, mayhem and sorcery?

Role-player organizer Sina Schiewek isn't too sure.

[Sina Schiewek, Role-Player Organizers]:
"Well, there isn't actually a script, we just work on it throughout the year. There are now about 80-100 people involved. We started about eight years ago and the whole thing has just kept growing. It's like a background story and every year we invent new tasks that the role-players have to resolve."

True, it is only a game, but pesky real-life niceties like cell phones and modern clothing are frowned upon.

And each role-playing participant pays 135 Euros for the five-day escape from reality.

A unique, and quite harmless, relief from the stress and tedium of modern life.
