ANCHOR BRIEF:
This year's April 25th marked the ninth anniversary of when more than 10,000 Falun Gong practitioners surrounded Zhongnanhai, Beijing's Office of Appeals.
FOOTAGE:
This past Friday, practitioners around the world continued to appeal in front of Chinese embassies and consulates for the end of the suppression of Falun Gong in China.
Many analysts have considered this event a turning point in what led to China's official crackdown of Falun Gong practitioners.
The April 25th appeal back in 1999 was initiated to call for the release 45 practitioners that were illegally detained by Tianjin police weeks earlier.
Initial talks with the Premier Zhu Rongji on April 25th led to a resolution and the release of those detained. However, Zhu's decisions were later over taken by China's former head of state, Jiang Zemin.
The nation-wide crackdown against Falun Gong started on July 20th, 1999.
According to a 2006 report by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, 66 percent of reported victims of torture in previous years were Falun Gong practitioners.
