I got to sit down for an "interview" with Ken Rockwell and talk about RAW vs JPEG. Well not exactly, I am still waiting on a response from Ken to have an open minded discussion about RAW and JPEG and get his take.

This is Part 3 of #1 "I get it right in the camera"

Nothing I love more than hearing I get it right in the camera!!

"RAW for amateurs because they can't get it right in the camera"

So that's why point-and-shoot cameras shooting jpegs, are designed for pros!

Thats a silly comparison since dslr and points and shoots is an apples to oranges comparison - they serve two difference purposes.

Almost all sports photographers use jpeg due to the cameras can process the images faster, and they can get more shots.

Who can make the claim that photos in Sports Illustrated aren't incredible pics ?

If the digital camera was 'The last supper' then Jesus would be RAW & Judas would be JPEG....There's no argument. The eleventh commandment has been written!

My point is: RAW is designed for photography so we should use RAW for best results. The Jpeg is for publishing on website. I cannot imagine that we send RAW every time in email or a file from a phone when we're on vacation to show somebody we're on a beach or something like that. It would last hours to send something to somebody. The purpose for RAW file and Jpeg file is different. We should learn what is it for and use it wisely.

I mean it's very important to use better files (RAW for example) if they are used for professional purpose. I shoot RAW because I want to have better control at the point when I hold all data. Jpeg is already compressed so it doesn't hold original amount of data no matter how big it is. Jpeg like gif format are originally designed for internet where speed is most important. The smaller files move and download quickly, but the quality is poor. You cannot use very compressed files for printing.

Since I shoot raw files I never go back to the jpeg. Of course there's lot of things you can do with jpegs. But it won't give you best results. It's like making a logo in jpeg and give to people who print it on large banner to hang it on a building. No one does that kind of thing. Everyone knows that a logo has to be made in curves so when it's got bigger it doesn't loose quality. The difference between RAW and curves is that RAW has limited data, curves can be enlarged and still are lossless.

My little sister. She likes to show off big camera but doesn't know what is it really for. So, she could buy little compact camera that only makes jpeg files and she could use it properly in 100%. It's little, more comfortable and even monkey could operate this thing. You point and you shoot. That's it. Person who buys some expensive camera doesn't take better photos than my sister with a compact camera.

Hello there, are you familiar with "photo SFX art" (do a Google search for it)? There you can watch a good free video explaining the best way to make better pictures. This helped Daniel to shoot photos that leave you with that jaw-dropping-effect any time you look at them. It may work for you also.
