List of those men from Kilkenny, Ireland, known to have been killed in the First World War 1914-18. They would have joined various regiments of the British Army or other countries' armies as Ireland at that time had not achieved Independence from Britain. Although men joined up in their droves, conscription was fiercely opposed and never introduced in Ireland. In fact, the threat of conscription polarised Irish society and sent many of it's opponents into the rebel camp, which laid the basis for Independence. More information on those killed can be found online at Commonwealth War Graves Commission: www.cwgc.org. Touring Exhibition details via Kilkenny Photographic Society website: www.kilkennyphoto.net. The organisers would be pleased to receive information on people from Kilkenny who served in WW1 for inclusion in our touring exhibition.

  • Hi Ozzie. We keep finding new names. Thanks for the info. He is listed on the CWGC website and on Great War Forums. I can't add weblinks here but do a search.

We can add him to our text list. Do you have any photos so we can include him in our exhibition?

  • Our exhibition "Kilkenny and the Great War 1914-18" comprises family stories of the local men who went to fight as well as local women, clergy and even horses from Kilkenny who took part. We collect local family stories and incorporate them into the exhibition material. The latest showing will be in the County Council Buildings, John Street, Kilkenny from the first week of November onwards. The project will also be featured in Nationwide on RTE1 TV on 11.11.11

  • @jameswburke The RTE TV 'Nationwide' programme will be on tonight 9th November 2011. They have told us that they've edited out most of our stuff, but hope to feature our project in depth at a future date.

  • Richard Connell.

1 of 5 brothers who joined up from Maudlin St, Kilkenny.

3 were killed, 2 returned (one minus a leg).

We have 2 of those killed, Con and Mick Connell on our list. Richard was their younger brother who joined later but was probably underage when he joined up. He was killed on 29/09/1918 and is buried at BUCQUOY ROAD CEMETERY, FICHEUX.

They were all grand uncles of Sean Courtney who was brought up in Maudlin St.

  • Update: More info on FW Hall from Boards.ie enquiry: FW Hall's father, also Frederick was also in the british army and was a bandmaster in the 2nd volunteer battalion south lancashire regiment. FWH had 2 brothers KIA.

I've also discovered that he is a household name in Canada and features in a special one-minute piece on Canadian TV which is broadcast regularly, as well as being part of the school carriculum.

  • FW Hall VC

Frederick William Hall was born in Kilkenny, Ireland 21 February 1885. At the beginning of the First World War he was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Company Sergeant-Major (CSM) Hall was awarded the Victoria Cross on 24 April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres in Belgium for giving up his life to save a wounded comrade.

Any more info about FW Hall would be gratefully received.

  • You're missing off my Mum's family, the Briscoes. I only have details of my Grand Uncle Mervy Whiyby Briscoe, killed in the RFC while serving as an observer.

  • A marvellous little tribute to the soldiers of Kilkenny. Well done and thank you.
