Salome is de geschiedenis van de prinses uit Judea die verliefd wordt op de profeet Jochanaän en uiteindelijk, omdat ze door hem wordt afgewezen, zijn hoofd eist en dit ook krijgt. Richard Strauss baseerde zijn compositie op een zeer tekstgetrouwe Duitse bewerking van Oscar Wildes gelijknamige toneelstuk. De opera is typisch een werk van rond 1900. Geschreven in een tijd tussen vernieuwing en verval, voert het personages ten tonele die zich in een gelijksoortige constellatie bevinden. Als verwend kind wordt Salome beheerst door extreme verlangens. Ze gaat tot het uiterste om in een omgeving waarin alles excessief wordt uitgeleefd, toch liefde en aandacht te krijgen. Door suggestieve toonschildering en een zeer gevarieerd klankpalet slaagde Strauss erin een gistende, broeierige atmosfeer te scheppen. Met dit werk deed de moderne psychologie haar intrede op het operatoneel.

I saw this production recently in Tokyo. For the first time in my life, I witnessed a truthful, honest presentation of the score on stage. Konwitschny understands the music so well, he is able to match its vulgarity, beauty, crudity and wit with his staging. I used to be grossed out by this opera - its theme is disgusting - but finally I saw that it is actually a love story. Yes - a perverse, sick love story - but that is without doubt what the beautiful music in the final scene is telling us.

Do I really hear "Das Lachen war immer die erste Stufe der Überwindung einer scheinbaren Unlösbarkeit" ? There is only one place in the world where they are ignorant enough to fall for that kind of mumbo jumbo - The Dutch Opera!

Will someone please put this man out of his misery? His productions are complete and total crap. The irony is I think that he's related to Franz Konwitchny, a highly respectable Wagner conductor who's probably spinning like a top in his grave.

Tradition has nothing to do with naivity.

For a director it's in the first place important to LISTEN to the music and to LISTEN to the words. This man does not understand this beautiful work. And the music of Strauss is not important for him (he let his cast clap and whistle and loudly laugh THROUGH the music. Peter Konwitschny has NO RESPECT for this work and therefor he's a very bad director. Never more I want to see his work! I can use my money much better.

Well, I think Konwitschny is a very talented opera director. As long as there is a consistency of stage direction all through the opera, then I won't mind if it is provocative. I have seen live his Al Gran Sole Carico D'Amore and his Bohème, so far, and will see his Lohengrin. Regietheater when it is clever and smart is sometimes preferable to certain naive traditional productions...

Yes, he's extremely talented for Bad things. He tries to shock with his necrophilia and other perversity, but that's not longer possible after films as Caligula and Salo.

Liever voortaan maar weer een goede regisseur uit eigen "huis", zoals Pierre Audi, die heeft mij nog nooit teleurgesteld. Of een andere (echte !!) vernieuwer als Christoph Schlingensief.

nah, there's still great other ones out there. Aswell traditionalist as 'more free' ones that DO understand what the story is about without using stuff that's just randomly thrown in and semi 'cool'.

And even if reviewers like him. He still got big 'boo' s from even the dutch audience.
