Two Redowas (learned from Ben Hall - see other video on my channel) and a Waltz from the Irish tradition, played on a Rudall & Rose 8-keyed simple system concert flute made in 1843. The redowas - a Polish dance similar to a mazurka, derivatives of the Waltz - can both be found in The Roche Collection. 1st is "Napper Tandy", a Redowa or Mazurka, #164 in the Roche Collection and seemingly an extension (B music is added) of an "Air" entitled "I'll be a Good Boy" that appears in O'Neill's (1850). 2nd is "The Barnacle Redowa" AKA "John Donnan's Mazurka" and is #152 in Roche. 3rd is "Mrs Crotty's Waltz" , also known as Mrs Kinney's or Kenny's, apparently.
There are a few flubs in my playing, I'm afraid!

  • wow such a wonderfull sound!! I really love irish songs and this flute made it perfect!!

  • Thanks, Tabitha - glad you enjoyed it and to link up.

Forgive my pedantry, but these are "tunes", NOT "songs"! (Songs have words/voices involved!!!) I think it is really important to keep the proper meanings of these words!

  • I'm sorry.. but my english isn't that good.. so i sometime use the wrong words..

I'm a flute player to.. so i know the differents!!

  • Hi Tabitha - sure, I didn't mean to criticise your excellent attempts at a foreign language. It is just that that mis-usage is very common in current English - in the age of the MP3 player and ipod people seem to use "song" as once they used "track" or "number", regardless of whether what they refer to is actually a song. cont.

  • cont.

In pop music where almost everything is a song, no problem, but applied to other genres it is annoyingly misleading! In trad music there is a very clear and important distinction between songs and tunes........... Enough said!

  • omg this is so brilliant. I would love to start learning irish folk tunes on my flute...i just love this type of music...so happy upbeat and jolly :)

  • Thanks for your comment - glad you enjoyed it. Of course, not all Irish (& other Celtic) trad music is jolly! There's plenty of dark, mournful, ethereal etc. stuff, especially slow airs...... But most of it is dance music like these. Go ahead and learn some - there's plenty of good (& not so good) stuff here on YouTube, or join Chiff & Fipple Flute Forum for advice.

BTW, I notice the sound quality of this video is burbly here on YouTube - the original is fine - must have happened in uploading.
