"The Way of Love"
Composer: Jacques Dieval
English Lyrics: Al Stillman

The lyricist for the French version
"J'ai le mal de toi" is Michel Rivegauche.

The song was originally written in French under the name 'J'ai le mal de toi' and recorded by Lili Castel for the song competition "Musik Ohne Grenzen" on the Belgian radio (BRT).

The French lyrics were written by Michel Rivgauche.

In 1965, it was released as a single by Kathy Kirby in English. Curiously, while this single failed to chart in her native United Kingdom, where Kirby placed several singles on the charts in the mid-60's, it became her only song to place on Billboard Hot 100.
The song's lyrics were penned from a male point of view. Kirby's rendition does not change the perspective, creating a story in which the subject to whom she sings has left her for a male.

"The Way of Love" was later recorded by Cher. Her version hit number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1972.

  • This was a great song back in 65. The only copy I have is in my head and for some reason your Upload doen't quite sound like my memory. Is by chance your version off an LP, cause my memory is the 45. :-)

  • @RXRguy, I've always known this being the same tune as it has always been. Anyhow, this is from a CD - The Very Best of Kathy Kirby (20-tracks compilation).

    65:)

  • One question, only maybe somebody can explain me. Original is in French "J'al le mal de toi" by Lili Castel. But Dalida sing this melody named as Parlez-moi de lui in french, too. I guess it is same song, isn't it?

  • that's a good question, gudrinieks.

The title of both Dalida & Francoise Hardy's versions is Parlez Moi de Lui (Tell me about him), same in Japanese [ 彼のこと話して = Tell me about him]. I wonder if the J'ai le mal de toi (I have a lot of you) has ever been recorded.

  • Thanks, especially for translation. But who was author of Parlez-moi de lui lyrics?

  • Based on the wikipedia statement that "the song was originally written in French under the name 'J'ai le mal de toi' could also suggest that the French lyrics (words) has remained the same although the name (title) has changed to "Parlez-moi de lui" (i'm just guessing).

    65:)

  • THIS SONG RECORDED IN 1970 IN SPANISH BY LISSETTE AND HIT IN PUERTO RICO. THE NAME IN SPANISH FROM THE SONG IS: 'HABLAME DE EL" TRANSLATE FROM FRENCH VERSION AND NOT FROM ENGLISH VERSION. IN THE LP THE NAME OF THE AUTHOR IS PAUL MAURIAT. IS CORRECT??? THANK YOU!!

  • Nickcat5 I am not a big Cher fan singing wise. Just mentioning facts

  • Cher trashed this,I don't care how high it charted!! She didn't sing it,She YELLED it!!

  • @7734Duke Cher didn't sing this, she YELLED it. Only proves what I've often said about the charts;they don't tell the whole story.

  • I'm 19 (male), and I just cried after hearing this for the first time. Every single sentence is exatly what is happening to me now.

  • This isn't the same version that I have, which is on a compliation album I bought in the US in the '60s on Parrot Records which was a subsidiary of London Records.

  • Love that song. My husband has Kathy's song on an album of his with British artists of the 60's. RIP, Kathy.
