Listen, anybody can do whatever makes them feel good about themselves. There is no right or wrong wanting to be lighter, darker, or just stay the way you are. I am Hispanic and my skin tends to get that murky unattractive colorwhen I go out in the sun so I try hard to keep it light (not get white) because I think I look better that way. Nobody has to get lighter or darker if they don't want to. It's a free country.
