The Force of Destiny is an opera about retribution, in which almost all of the major characters meet their death by the end of the performance. Verdi had to rework the opera several times in order to make it palatable to a general audience. The final version was less depressing and became popular with audiences around the world. To this day, the opera is thought to be cursed, due to the misfortune brought to many of its performers (the superstitious Pavarotti never played the role of Alvaro for this reason). The overture is one of Verdis finest. It is not the usual compilation of songs from the opera but rather a representation of two major themes: fate, introduced in the beginning of the work, and prayer, represented by the slower, more lyrical melody in the middle section.
