A step by step look at the process of making ice at the University of Illinois Ice Rink in August of 2008. Explained by Dave Bagger of Campus Recreation, Zamboni driver and event coordinator Andrew White, & U of I Hockey Coach Chad Cassel. Shot, produced & edited by WICD Newschannel 15 Photographer Chris Sabo. Champaign, IL
In the old days of the '70s and '80s it was only open from Oct to Mar and the ice was clear and not painted. It only got white from lots of skaters scratching the ice up and took a few weeks to get thick so figure skaters could not use their picks or risked hitting the concrete floor. Used to have huge crowds skate on weekends as it was very popular and inexpensive to skate. Glad to see it still running and doing well!
