Rob Gonsalves - Surrealistic Painter

Rob Gonsalves is a Canadian painter of magic realism with a unique perspective and style. During his childhood, Gonsalves developed an interest in drawing from imagination using various media. By the age of twelve, his awareness of architecture grew as he leaned perspective techniques and he began to create his first paintings and renderings of imagined buildings.
After an introduction to artists Dalí and Tanguy, Gonsalves began his first surrealist paintings. The "Magic Realism" approach of Magritte along with the precise perspective illusions of Escher came to be influences in his future work.
In his post college years, Gonsalves worked full time as an architect, also painting trompe-l'œil murals and theater sets. After an enthusiastic response in 1990 at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Gonsalves devoted himself to painting full time.
Although Gonsalves' work is often categorized as surrealistic, it differs due to the fact that the images are deliberately planned and result from conscious thought. Ideas are largely generated by the external world and involve recognizable human activities, using carefully planned illusionist devices. Gonsalves injects a sense of magic into realistic scenes. As a result, the term "Magic Realism" describes his work accurately. His work is an attempt to represent human beings' desire to believe the impossible, to be open to possibility.

Rob Gonsalves nasce a Toronto nel 1959. Fin dallinfanzia sviluppa un interesse per il disegno. A 12 anni inizia ad interessarsi di architettura e impara le tecniche legate alle prospettive. Inizia cosi a dipingere quegli edifici immaginari che lo seguiranno per tutta la sua carriera. Finito il college lavora a tempo pieno come architetto, ampliando ulteriormente le sue conoscenze sulle geometrie e le prospettive, che molto utilizzerà nei suoi dipinti. Contemporaneamente realizza murales e scenografie teatrali, fino al 1990, anno nel quale decide di occuparsi di pittura a tempo pieno.
Da sempre ricrea quel momento magico in cui si passa dal sonno alla veglia, in cui la realtà si fonde con quel che resta del sogno.
I supporti di un ponte ferroviario che si trasformano in acrobati in equilibrio. Nubi che diventano dei velieri che navigano nel cielo. Bambini che saltano sui lettini e decollano in volo su di un paesaggio a patchwork sono solo alcuni degli esempi che fanno capire la forza espressiva e la capacità onirica di Gnsalves, dove il surealismo si fonde con la magia e da' vita al quel realismo magico in cui tutto è consentito.Influenzato da maestri come Magritte, Chris Van Allsburg e, sopratutto, M.C Escher, con le sue intriganti illusioni prospettiche Gonsalves, con i suoi dipinti, esplora visivamente le possibilità dellimmaginazione, incoraggiando a guardare oltre i confini della vita quotidiana, verso un luogo onirico dove è la fantasia a dettar legge.
Gonsalves trae ispirazione per le sue illusioni dalle azioni quotidiane in cui chiunque si può riconoscere, iniettando in queste scene realistiche un senso di magia.
In tutti i suoi quadri la normalità appare solo per mutare e diventare qualcosaltro.
