My understanding is....this song was originally recorded on one of those cheap plastic 4-track recorders. Sounded great on the record,sounds great here.

Soft Effects is so brilliant to me. It took a lot of repeat listens, but I love it now. I think this song comes across well on that disc, punchy and raucous. You're right though: live renderings always have more vitality to 'em.
