This sounds much more interesting than Formula Dé.

people in the back have the advantage of knowing the pace the frontrunners have set, so they can adjust their speed. THe frontrunner has the advantage of a clear track. I recommend setting a timing checkpoint halfway through the stage, where when you cross you have to total up your time so far.
