You are so right. When he does the demo to show the difference and the at the end says, "Could you hear the difference? It was pretty subtle.". I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

Standards have their place in jazz! I consider them a training ground for improvisation. So if you want to sound like Holdsworth or McLaughlin then I would suggest you start out by learning the standards and evolve into a more modern style. Standards tend to have more complicated chord progressions that are a great training ground. Learn how not to get lost in the progression first then get your legatto on!
