I'm also running a 4850 :/

I have the same problem as this! Running 4850 x2.. Have you found a solution?
-
Yeah, I get the same thing, and then my monitors get no signal. No way to fix unless I reinstall... Bollocks!
If they can fix this, I think I can break my dependence on windows!!!

I found that my ati 2400 series worked fine in ubuntu 8.04 with the ati drivers but would crash in 9.04. I set up 8.04 with the ati drivers, got my system working perfectly then updated using the update manager to 9.04. I'm using it now and it all works well.

Same problem, Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit on a Pavilion HP laptop. Installed the drivers for my goddamn ATI Mobility RADEON 3450 HD and got my boot fucked up. So annoying, I really hope someone fixes this shit.

FYI. Catalyst display driver 9.7 is what I used.

I have 2X4850 (I know not the same card but in the same family). I just installed the latest Ubuntu 64-bit release (9.04) and updated it immediately following install (new kernel came out). Next I followed the AMD/ATI instructions on their website for the card and they seem to be working fine. I have booted and am running gnome, but I haven't done much else yet.

what link?
I had the same problem, here's what I did:
rebooted, hit esc to go to the menu
went to recovery mode
went to the option that says "netroot" on the left side
waited all the script out
put this in
"sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx"
it pretty much takes away the graphics and loads ubuntu without them, but you can very easily get back what you took away, so it's an easy fix for the most part

Thank you fpr you answer. That is correct with command you provided this pretty much will remove fglrx driver and for most if not all people will be able to log back in to X. But here most people know that and working on how to make R600/R700 hardware to work inside Ubuntu 9.04. Once again good post and advice, at first I had to reinstall whole thing, Also in recovery mode all you need is get in to shell and no networking is needed.

Okay here is what I got and looks like this is for real. I can't promise anything because I have not tried it yet myself but looks like solution is available for quite sometime now. Please follow this link and let us know if it works. On my side I'll try it myself and hopefully next video will be with working CompWiz :D

Here is what I did. I spend about 2 hours with guys from #ubuntu at IRC and we could not install drivers. Simply does not work. We tried every possible situation ...nothing. Then I decided to get back to 8.04.2 Official 9.4 ATI drivers work perfectly without ANY configuration. Just sh ./filename.run and reboot. So I don't know what's up but guys told me to wait for next release.
So for now I am at 8.04.2 on next release (9.5 ?) I'll update situation.
