Ah, Mali... a great african civilization. Mansa Musa was a truely enlightened ruler in a time when they were very few. I wish the Mali of today a much greater future!

I saw on a tv programme recently that Timbuktu was not always the impoverished backwater that it is today but was once a seat of great learning. A sort of African equivalent to Oxford.

stupid,, The Arabs or the Arma in General did bring down Timbuktu to the lowest level among its pears. to the contrast the Askias ,who are blacks and african . did give Timbuktu it glorious Fame. we know the History,,,,

I saw some Nigerian women the other day. One was literally putting two fingers in one nostril. She looked like Frank Bruno and her voice could upend a London bus!

I agree Timbuktu would have been nothing without the Arabs. Even now it looks like a pack of mud-built dwellings collapsing in the desert.
But there was a thriving slave market (Africans selling other Africans) once
