Every version has a different year and date at the start of it:)

@CompVid101They would have recognized it as a professional version of the song.

@RPenta - a matter of taste, certainly. But simply as a matter of information, those earlier folkies were trying to replicate the sound of the songs as they would have been sung originally. Versions like this and the Pogues and so on are the Hollywood version - very glitzy and professional. But no whaler singing this tune on a New Bedford whaler in the North Atlantic in 1840 would recognize this version as their song. And if you want to hear a great banjo part - try the Chad Mitchell Trio.

The best version of this song I have heard even better than the famous one with Judy Collins and Ted Bickel which was excellent.
I think a common fault of many of the great American folk singers of the 50's 60's and 70's is that their versions often lacked sufficient instrumentation-there is a hell of a banjo player on this song.

Heh, when I heard it it was in 1853.

@gfl1984 I'm 19, and I usually go to Irish pubs (or irish-themed as I don't live in ireland :P) where the people are very friendly, and the music great! :)

Excellent, Fergus on lead. One of my favorites of Ryans Fancy.

Wonderful rendition to a classic sea chantey song!

Nice song. I love by Judy Collins or Peter,Paul & Mary
I am 18 years old and i wish i grew up in the era when this music was popular. It really does it for me as opposed to the stupid dance music in the nightclubs these days

I'm 5 years old and I first got into this music when I wrote it onboard a schooner that fished out of Gloucester back in the 1840's.
I'm American born but my father was an Irish fisherman and my mother was a codfish from the harsh deeps of the North Atlantic.
