on this particular wave he is keeping the boat on the sweetspot by using prying and ruddering strokes..prying is using the gunnel for leverage..he only uses draw strokes for recovery mostly when the boat opens up too much. The force of the river coming from the front is meeting the force of the river coming up from under his rear so to speak,so he keeps the boat there by making constant adjustments to the angle, tilt ,forward/ backward lean, and keeping the boats forward/reverse momentum in check.
You get up on the face of the wave and find the balance point between gravity pulling you down the wave face and the water rushing under the boat trying to push you up it.
In this video the back half of the canoe is being pushed up the face of a wave, but gravity pulls it back down. It's a sweet feeling.

For some reason I thought the paddle was holding the person there. I need to learn how to do that someday.
