I think that the movie does stray away from the books in a lot of places, but I really think it is a modernization of the original characters and story theme. They're still in the Victorian setting, but they are trying to introduce the stories to a younger audience and to do that you have to change a few points.

@cozzaspee putrid terrible. read ever holmes story, this film was so wretchedly wrong in so many dimensions it was sickeing. they added hollywood absurdity like holmes in shirtless scenes and other rubbish. downey is decent actor but I didn't (and will never) waste my time with that film. orig. books too good.

I just re-read the entire Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes canon (all the stories and novels) for the first time since college, and I was actually amazed how CLOSELY the Guy Ritchie movies adhere to the real text and characters. Read "A Scandal in Bohemia" if you've never read any of the canon and want a quick, funny and apt introduction to the "real" Holmes, Watson and Irene Adler. Holmes WAS a man of action, a boxer and fighter, and Watson was no bumbling sidekick. I would consider myself a Hol

like Guy Ritchie says this is just his view of sherlock holmes whether or not you enjoy it is your problem and no offense but jeez no one cares! Why would you want to focus on something you don't like? people only do that and argue to try and change something...but you can't really do anything about it so why are you wasting your time and just making other people miserable just bcuz you don't like this version. You can't turn back time.
